Pashinyan Says Armenia Is Obligated to Allow Road Linking Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, at a government cabinet session today, said that Armenia is obligated to provide Azerbaijan a land connection between the western region of Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan, and that Baku has not taken advantage of his government’s proposals in this regard.

"Officially, I say that Azerbaijan can cross the border of Armenia at several points and drive to Nakhichevan. The westernmost region of Azerbaijan is the Kazakh region. We are ready. Let them come, cross, go to Nakhijevan. And we guarantee the safety of that road in accordance with Armenian law,” Pashinyan said.

Baku has always insisted that any road linking Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan should fall under its control. Yerevan has rejected any such demand.

Pashinyan’s remarks follow Baku’s demand, made earlier this week, that the Lachin Corridor between Armenia and Karabakh be closed. The 2020 Karabakh war ceasefire agreement calls for the construction of a new road linking Armenia and Karabakh that will bypass the town of Lachin by 2024.
