Putin Says Russia Played Major Role in Curbing Armenia-Azerbaijani Border Fighting
Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Uzbekistan yesterday, said that Moscow played a major role in curbing hostilities along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
"We regret this (conflict - ed.) and, of course, the victims. Including and above all, under the influence of Russia, this conflict was localized, I hope this will continue,” Putin told reporters according to Ria Novosti.
Putin said Russia, despite military operations in Ukraine, has enough resources to persuade neighboring countries to seek peace.
Putin said the recent bout of fighting on the Armenia-Azerbaijan is not related to Karabakh.
The SCO, which focuses on political, economic and security matters, has eight member nations – China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, Iran and Belarus. In terms of Geographic scope and population, it’s regarded as the world’s largest regional organization.
The presidents of Turkey and Azerbaijan also attended the summit that saw a meeting between Putin and Ilham Aliyev.
At the summit, Aliyev is quoted as saying that “neither Azerbaijan nor Armenia wanted a full-scale war.”
Aliyev said Armenia must accept Baku’s terms of a bilateral peace treaty and open a land corridor connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan.
