Aliyev Cautiously Optimistic of Armenia Peace Deal

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said he is cautiously optimistic about reaching a peace deal with Armenia, but warned that Yerevan would “make another serious mistake” if it does not seek compromise.

“Azerbaijan wants to put an end to enmity and hatred and open a new page of peace. We have some optimism about the peace process because a few days ago, the meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia was held, the first such meeting with the agenda of preparing a draft peace treaty. We hope it will not take long," the Azerbaijani Press Agency (APA) quotes Aliyev as saying at a development forum in Aghdam.

Aliyev stressed the need to demarcate the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan based on historical documents and maps, international experience, and a specific methodology.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijani met in Geneva on October 2.

Yesterday, the two ministers had a joint telephone conversation with the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during which the parties presented their views on the October 2 meeting.
