Armenia, Turkey Special Reps to Meet in Turkey

The Turkish daily Sabah, citing unnamed diplomatic sources, reports that the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey will next meet in Turkey.

The paper does not give an approximate date for the meeting.

Sabah writes a commission will be formed to implement the decisions ironed out by Ruben Rubinyan and Serdar Kılıç during their last meeting in Vienna in July.

Sabah reports that its sources say normalization talks between Yerevan and Ankara are progressing, and that Turkey links normalizing relations with Armenia to ongoing talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The paper writes that the sooner Armenia and Azerbaijan sign a peace deal, the sooner the border between Armenia and Turkey can open.

Sabah reporter Betyul Usta writes that in 1993, when the Armenian-Turkish border was closed, 140,000 people and 40,000 tons of goods crossed it.

"If the border opens today, these numbers will increase at least tenfold," Usta writes, adding the Turkish border post at Akyaka, a stone’s throw from Gyumri, could be made operational in one month.
