Bayramov, Borrell Discuss Lachin Corridor Impasse

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Affairs Josep Borrell, by telephone today, discussed the situation along the Lachin Corridor linking Artsakh and Armenia.

Bayramov, according to a statement released by his office, denied claims that Baku has not closed the roadway, claiming that several vehicles regularly transit the roadway on a regular basis bringing gods and medical supplies to Artsakh.

Borrell, according to the ministry statement, said current tensions in the region are of concern and stressed the importance of sticking to the current peace agenda between the two countries.

Transit along the corridor has been blocked since December 12 when a group of Azerbaijani protesters staged a demonstration along a section of roadway near Shushi, demanding that Russian peacekeepers allow them to inspect mines in those parts of Karabakh still controlled by Armenians.

Russian peacekeepers have refused, resulting in the ongoing standoff.
