Armenia: First Person Arrested in Deadly Military Barracks Fire

Armenia’s Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan today announced that the first person has been arrested following the January 19 fire in military barracks that killed fifteen soldiers.

Vardapetyan announced the news at today’s government cabinet session but failed to identify the person.

She said that evidence gathered so far supports claims made by Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and the defense ministry that the fire was ignited when an officer poured gasoline into a woodstove used for heating the barracks in the country’s Gegharkunik province.

Others, including a local army officer, have refuted this claim.

Investigative Committee Head Argishti Kyaramyan said the gasoline theory is substantiated by the testimonies of all the witnesses questioned so far.

"The watchman, who was a direct witness to the incident, also testified and substantiated that hypothesis. Everything is very clear, and looking for other causes isn’t correct,” he said.
