Territorial Integrity of Armenia, Azerbaijan Critical to Solve Karabakh Conflict, Says Olaf Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during his meeting in Berlin with visiting Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on March 14, said Germany is concerned about the unstable situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

"The situation is unsustainable in the long term and harbors the risk of further escalations. The events of the past few weeks and months have shown this again and again,” Scholz said according to his office.

Scholz stressed that any settlement of the Karabakh conflict “must be based on the principle of the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan. This includes respecting the rights and safety of the people in Karabakh.”

Scholz described those rights as “human and minority rights”.

Aliyev, according to his office, claimed that Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan missed its chance for peace when he announced in 2019 that “Karabakh is Armenia, full stop.”

“Now is the time for peace. We have proposed peace to Armenia and offered a peace treaty based on five principles. I do hope that Armenia does not miss this chance and era of peace and cooperation finally begins in the South Caucasus,” Aliyev is quoted as saying.

Aliyev’s office also quotes Scholz as saying that Germany has always supported the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and never accepted Nagorno Karabakh as an independent republic.
