440 Apply for Assylum in Armenia

440 people from twenty-five countries, applied for asylum in Armenia in the first half of 2023.

Armenia’s Ministry of the Interior reports the bulk, 131, were Iraqi nationals, followed by 115 (Ukraine), 41 (Iran), 39 (Egypt), 18 (Syria).

Ten Turkish and two Azerbaijani nationals applied for asylum. The applications of one Azerbaijani citizen and two from Turkey were terminated and one was rejected.

Of the 440 applicants, Armenia granted asylum to 179: 124 (Ukraine), 23 (Iraq), 12 (Syria), 6 (Pakistan), 4 (Iran), 3 (Nigeria), 2 (Egypt), 2 (Haiti), 2 (Myanmar), 1 (Republic of Congo).

Foreign nationals who seek refugee status and asylum in Armenia can temporarily reside in a special residence. If this isn’t possible, they are provided with monetary assistance to cover basic living needs: AMD 20,000 (US$40) for the asylum applicant, and AMD 15,000 ($30) for each member of his family.
