U.S. Supports Armenia's Territorial Integrity
Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan and visiting U.S. Senator Gary Peters met today in Yerevan and discussed the aftermath of Azerbaijan’s September 19 military offensive against Karabakh.
Peters described what he saw during his visit to the Syunik section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and reaffirmed Washington’s support of Armenia’s territorial integrity.
Simonyan, according to his office, welcomed the introduction of legislation in the U.S. Senate that would sanction the Azerbaijani government for its actions against Armenians and would authorize military financing for Armenia.
The legislation (Supporting Armenians Against Azerbaijani Aggression Act) was introduced on September 21 by U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senators Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Gary Peters (D-Mich.).
If adopted, the bill would repeal the waiver authority for section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, banning most assistance to the Government of Azerbaijan.
