Pashinyan Says Armenia Must Look for Other Security Partners
Responding to questions posed by opposition MPs today whether the Armenian government intends to pull out of the Russian-backed CSTO military alliance, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan noted that Russia has refused to sell arms to Armenia, and in such conditions, Armenia should look for other security partners.
Pashinyan, when asked to explain why he will not attend a November 23 CSTO session in Minsk, said he’s decided not to go for “various reasons”.
Pashinyan again stressed that CSTO has not properly responded to Armenia’s security challenges, adding that the public wants to know why Armenian officials continue to attend such meetings and return emptyhanded.
Pashinyan noted that by not participating in these events, both Armenia and the CSTO are given time to think about their future actions.
Opposition Armenia (Hayastan) faction MP Agnesa Khamoyan described the government's policy as risky and ill-conceived.
Pashinyan did not go to Bishkek to attend the October 12 CIS summit in Bishkek.
