Open Discussion: How to Put an End to the Armenian Oligarchy

I want to open a discussion about what it will take to get rid of the oligarchic system that has long taken control of Armenia.

For years I have heard nothing but complaints about the various clan leaders who enjoy immunity from prosecution and use their power positions in government to essentially do whatever they want, like terrorizing Armenian citizens and even having them killed as in the case of Tigran Avetyan. There is a video of Ruben Hayrapetyan on YouTube boasting about how he’s harassed and “punished” people, even some at gunpoint, so that he gets his way. But not all peer powerheads are so brazen as to admit committing such acts.

When they asked my Master how many time should one forgive his brother who has sinned against one, Christ replied “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy –seven times.” What this means is that the sinning brother has unlimited chance to get forgiveness of our Lord as long as the apology is sincere. I hope Ruben Hayrapetyan’s apology was sincere because it is only the sincere apologies that warrant forgiveness. Going back to the “Open Discussion,” I think that it is absolutely correct to point out it is not just Oligarchy in general but precisely Armenian Oligarchy that we need to get rid of. Every culture has its own flavor of Oligarchy and our beast is unique just like our People. We as Armenians of 21st Century need to put great effort in distinguishing our value/belief system that we hold as the framework of our being. Is it all about drinking the best vodka, filling our stomachs with quality foods and grabbing as much booty (in all its definition) as we can? Or is it about personal responsibility that we take upon ourselves to ensure the continuance of a worthy people that we are? These are the questions that so called Oligarchs need to ask themselves. If they choose nobly they would not care of their unworthy son in the face of a better person when choosing an heir. Armenian leaders of today need to understand that we are on the verge of becoming Assyrians or gypsies! People without a land of their own where they can nurture, cultivate and enhance their culture. A rich gypsy is still a gypsy, an outsider. I was born in Armenia and I feel responsible to the people and the land into which I was born and I do not want to leave this world knowing that people whom I called my own are worse off now than before I was born. Armenian Oligarchs need to take my previous sentence to their hearts and then they would disappear.
