U.S. Embassy in Yerevan Bans Employees from Travelling to Armenia-Azerbaijan Border

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia issued a security alert today prohibiting its employees and their families from any non-essential travel to various areas near the Azerbaijani border:

These include:

  • Gegharkunik region east of Vardenis
  • Syunik region east of Goris
  • Syunik region south of Kapan
  • Travel through Yeraskh village in the Ararat Province is allowed, stopping is not.

“U.S. citizens should continue to exercise caution near all international borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan.  Be aware that some portions of the road may cross international boundaries without notice. Roads may be controlled by checkpoints or closed to travelers without notice,” the alert reads.

The embassy doesn’t specify why it issued this security alert.

Ezzat Allah Toosi: I'm sure you question Azerbaijan's ten month blockade of the Lachin Corredor, the only access to Nagorno-Karabakh, leaving the Armenian residents without food or medical care. When the finally opened that single road, within a week, 110,000 people left EVERYTHING behind and emigrated to Armenia. Now Azerbaijan and Turkey have declaired the hostile act of building the unauthorized Zangezur Corredor right through Armenia, *regardless* of Armenia's prohibition. This will unite Azerbaijan and Turkey to what Presidents Aliyev and Erdogan termed "the whole Turkic world". This leaves Armenians vulnerable to yet another genocide to absorb their land and economy. Even though Turkey still denies their actions of a century ago, the recent action against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh foreshadow intent.
