Yerevan Court Again Orders Detention of Russian Citizen on Drug Charges

Russian citizen Elizaveta Danilcheva, who was detained last June when Yerevan police raided a local club and later charged with illegally acquiring and possessing narcotics for sale, has again been placed under detention.

A Yerevan court released Danilcheva, placing her under house arrest in December and set bail at 2,5 million drams. State prosecutors challenged the decision and today the court ordered she be detained for three months.

Local human rights activists accused the police of beating and cursing those in the club during the raid.

Nikita Maksimenko, Danilcheva’s husband, says the prosecution, without any evidence, is trying to single out his wife as the mastermind of the alleged drug sale.

The couple moved to Armenia from Russia and married in Yerevan. Both worked as graphic designers. Maksimenko said that on the day of the raid they went to the Ban club to attend a friend’s wedding.

Danilcheva’s lawyers will appeal today’s decision.
