Moscow to Work with Armenia Over CSTO Squabble

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov today said Moscow will continue contacts with Yerevan and clarify the situation regarding Armenia's future membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Peskov’s remarks follow statements from Yerevan that Armenia will withdraw from the Russian-led military alliance if it doesn’t clarify its “zone of responsibility” in Armenia and pledge to defend it against foreign aggression.

“If the CSTO answers these questions and its reply corresponds to our expectations, it will mean that the problems between Armenia and the CSTO have been solved,” Pashinyan said during a press conference yesterday. “If not, Armenia will leave the CSTO. When? I can’t tell.”

Peskov said much work needs to be done within CSTO and with the Armenian government on the matter.
