Armenia Remains in CSTO, Says Russian Official

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk yesterday said Armenia remains an active member of the Moscow-led CSTO military pact despite recent remarks by Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan to the contrary.

"We haven’t heard that they are planning to sever ties. There has been no official statement in this regard," Overchuk told an Izvestia reporter.

Pashinyan, in a March 12 press conference, threatened to leave CSTO if it failed to clarify its “zone of responsibility” in Armenia and pledge to defend it against foreign aggression.

“If the CSTO answers these questions and its reply corresponds to our expectations, it will mean that the problems between Armenia and the CSTO have been solved,” Pashinyan said. “If not, Armenia will leave the CSTO. When? I can’t tell.”
