Unique Opportunity for Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Deal, Says Blinken

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, during a foreign policy talk at the Brookings Institute in Washington D.C. on July 1, said the U.S. believes there is now a unique opportunity to reach a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"There is a unique opportunity to implement peace agreements between the countries, which will stop the decades-long conflict and, I think, will create huge opportunities in the region in terms of economic ties, economic growth, establishment of ties between East and West, South and North countries. Azerbaijan should play a decisive role in this," Blinken said.

He added that the U.S., through it through diplomacy, is trying to bring Azerbaijan and Armenia closer to peace agreements.

"And, I think, now it is really possible. I talked about it about a week ago with President Ilham Aliyev. I think it is feasible and fully corresponds to the interests of the people of Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the entire region," continued Blinken.

On June 21, Blinken and Azerbaijani President Aliyev had a telephone conversation during which Blinken emphasized the importance of concluding a peace deal without delay.

He reiterated that the United States remains ready to support further cooperation between Baku and Yerevan in any way that will be useful for both sides.
