Atom Egoyan: "We've been through hell, but we have to cope"

After a six-year hiatus, Canadian-Armenian director Atom Egoyan returned to Armenia with his latest film Seven Veils. The screening followed the opening ceremony of the Golden Apricot International Film Festival. The filmmaker says the idea of the film arose while remounting the opera Salome which he had staged years ago. Hetq spoke with Atom Egoyan about cinema, diaspora, Artsakh, war, the challenges facing Armenia, as well as the positive developments in the field of cinema.

Egoyan should limit his commentary to the world of filmmaking. When he says "no one expected this war" (referring to the 2020 Artsakh War), who is he referring to? Many realized the status-quo couldn't continue, that Azerbaijan was preparing to resolve the Karabakh issue by force. Maybe he had his head in the sand. Does he take responsibility for this failing of his? Egoyan then says "We need to live with our illusions." Really???? So what is he proposing? That Armenians continue to live in a dream world of their own making, a mindset that will ultimately lead to further national failures? He again floats the myth that Armenians are unique in this world, blah, blah. Is he trying to score talking points with gullible Armenians who swallow such crap? As an artist, I would have expected a much more informed perspective from Egoyan regarding Armenians' contribution to world culture. Atom jan, stick to talking about your trade, making movies!!
