No 'Normalization Breakthrough' at Meeting of Armenia, Turkey Special Reps
There was no major breakthrough at today's meeting of the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey (Ruben Rubinyan, Serdar Kılıç).
This was the fifth round of talks between the two diplomats to normalize relations between the two countries. They met at the Margara-Alijan border crossing point on the Armenian-Turkish border.
The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports the sides agreed to assess the technical needs to operate the Akhurik-Akyaka railway border crossing and to facilitate visa procedures for holders of diplomatic/official passports.
The two diplomats last met in Vienna on July 1, 2022. Following the 2022 meeting, the Armenian foreign ministry announced the two countries agreed to permit citizens of third-countries to cross the land border separating them. This agreement has yet to be implemented.
The Turkish foreign ministry writes, “They reemphasized their agreement to continue the normalization process without any preconditions towards achieving the ultimate goal of full normalization between their respective countries.”
