European Union Calls on Baku to Sign Peace Deal with Armenia Before COP29

The Brussels-based EUobserver reports that the European Union has called on  Azerbaijan to sign a peace agreement with Armenia  prior to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku in November.

"It is time to take decisive steps towards sustainable and lasting peace. Azerbaijan should use the incentive of COP29 to sign peace with Armenia," the newspaper quotes a representative of the European Commission as saying.

The news outlet, however, referring to a representative of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan, states that "as before, there are serious obstacles to the signing of a peace treaty in the near future, and the position of the E.U. as an honest mediator is undermined."

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in an interview with Izvestia yesterday on the sidelines of the Baku meeting between Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, said any peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan must eliminate all mutual “territorial claims”.
