Lightning Strike Suspends Electricity from Armenia's Nuclear Power Plant
Armenian officials blamed a “lightning strike” for triggering an emergency shut-down of electricity from the Metzamor nuclear power plant at 9:55 pm local time on August 30.
Metzamor, the only nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus, located 36 kilometers west of Yerevan, provides one-third of the country’s electricity.
The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure reported plant officials proceeded to "relaunch" operations.
Update: Electricity was restored to the transmission grid on August 31.
