More Than Entertainment: Ezekiel Wants to Establish “Social Circus” in Armenia
Born and raised in Argentina, Ezekiel, is on a mission to reintroduce people in Armenia to the fun and wonderment that a circus provides.
Ezekiel, whose father is Armenian and mother, Italian, first came to Armenia nine years ago.
He takes his circus skills to the streets to promote his aim of establishing a “social circus” in Armenia.
The concept is often described as using the transformative power of circus to connect education, physical art, and social development.
Ezekiel says the “social circus” model empowers people, young and old alike, to engage, learn, play, laugh, join a group, share their skills, and do things as a team across social boundaries
“When people play, there are no hierarchies,” he says, emphasizing that circus arts can eliminate social boundaries.
In Armenia, Ezekiel introduces people to the simplest of circus skills through various events and street performances.
For many, it’s strange to see him on the street, in the park, where he performs juggling and object manipulation skills, but Ezekiel believes the most important thing is that everyone sees and understands what a fun and unifying force the circus has.
The “social circus” he envisages for Armenia emphasizes not only entertainment but also foster social development and inclusion.
One example of this approach is his work with the Unison NGO, that supports people with disabilities and protects their rights.
Ezekiel regularly conducts circus master classes, where people of different ages and abilities participate. During the classes, everyone is equal, because everyone comes to play, create and communicate with a common goal. Ezekiel says the important thing is that people laugh together, play, and feel safe.
He is also trying to spread the idea of social circus outside Yerevan. He has given performances in the Shirak and Syunik provinces. There, people have responded with interest, and children have participated in the rehearsals with great enthusiasm.
Ezekiel's desire is to foster the social circus culture in Armenia, so that people can feel more equal through play and communication, without restrictions and obstacles.
