Armenia's Parliament Approves Draft Peace Statement; Opposition Boycotts Vote
Armenia’s National Assembly today approved a government-backed draft statement on “Establishing Peace Between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
All sixty-four votes in favor came from the Civil Contract faction that supports Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan. The opposition Hayastan (Armenia) and Pativ Unem (With Honor) factions boycotted the vote.
The Hayastan faction described the draft as a disgrace, given that it fails to address the early release of Armenians detained in Baku or the removal of Azerbaijani forces from Armenia.
Pativ Unem labelled the draft “geopolitical adventurism” and replete with unilateral concessions to Azerbaijan.
Civil Contract MP Hayk Konjoryan, who presented the draft, said that since peace has been established between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the parliament should express its support for the peace process.
