Pashinyan to Vatican for Canonization of Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan travelled to the Vatican in Rome today to attend the canonization of Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan and six other Blesseds in St. Peter's Square that will be presided over by Pope Leo XIV.
Maloyan was an Armenian Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Mardin from 1911 to 1915. After repeatedly refusing conversion to Islam, he was tortured and murdered by the Ottoman gendarmerie during the Armenian Genocide. Maloyan was beatified by Pope John Paul II as a martyr in 2001.
Pashinyan and His Holiness Pope Leo XIV are scheduled to hold a private meeting.
Pashinyan will also meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State since 2013.
