Police intervened in Etchmiadzin today as hundreds of supporters and opponents of Catholicos Karekin II assembled outside the cathedral while he was attending evening prayers inside.

Those calling for his removal as head of the Armenian Apostolic Church tried to breach police lines at the cathedral soon after the prayer service began.

Minor scuffles occurred, but no one was injured, and police safely escorted the Catholicos and clergy from the site.
