Anna Hakobyan Ends Thirty-Year Relationship with Pashinyan
Anna Hakobyan, the wife of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in a Facebook video today, announced that she has ended her thirty-year relationship with her husband.
On February 17, Hakobyan, on her FB page, announced that her and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s ‘common law’ marriage had ended. “I ask everyone to be discreet and correct on this topic.” Anna Hakobyan wrote on her Facebook page.
The couple has four children, with their oldest born in 1998.
Following this announcement, many believed it was about the end of the unregistered marriage, and that two had legally recorded their marriage and congratulated them on the occasion.
Hakobyan and Pashinyan have been together for about thirty years, but they never officially registered their marriage in a church or through civil authorities, something that Pashinyan confirmed in 2024.
Hakobyan today announced she was leaving the government residence for rented accommodation, noting she owns no property as her purchased apartment is still under construction. She said her bank account holds 5 million drams, which she expects will suffice for her needs. Hakobyan does not own a car and will lose state security protection. She described her past relationship as a civil marriage and confirmed her departure from the government residence.
“I don’t want to say I love you all, which should not be said, but should be shown with action, with care, with care that is directed towards the beloved. I think that during these eight years, my actions, at least, were based only on love and care for you and the state,” she noted at the end of the video.
It is possible that Anna Hakobyan was also addressing these words to Nikol Pashinyan, since the latter mentions at the end of her videos that he loves everyone.
Hakobyan’s video today was followed by a post by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in which he states that he treats Anna’s decision with respect.
“In all my difficult days over the past thirty years, she has been by my side, my refuge and support. I am not sure that I have been that way for her. Perhaps I have caused more bitterness, for which I apologize,” Pashinyan wrote.
While Hakobyan announced the end of her relationship with the Prime Minister ten days ago, on February 17, on February 19, she, as the Executive Director of the My Step Foundation and the Prime Minister’s wife, continued to have meetings in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.
Although Anna Hakobyan said in the video that she wants to continue leading the My Step Foundation as its executive director, she also noted that it is not ruled out that she may be subject to criminal liability.
“That’s life. Perhaps such a development is possible, no matter what we do, we will live, we will see,” she said.
The Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee stated in a conversation with journalists that they are studying the decision of the “My Step” Foundation to hold free English courses, since organizations associated with parties participating in the elections are prohibited from doing charity work after the election day is set.
Hakobyan and Pashinyan met at Yerevan State University when both were studying at the Faculty of Journalism.
Hakobyan was a first-year student and was given an assignment to write an article in the newspaper, where Pashinyan was working at the time. “I wrote the article and submitted it to the editorial office. That’s how we met Nikol. Nikol fell in love with me at first sight, and I… a little later,” Anna Hakobyan noted in an interview given in 2018.
In an interview with Mediamax in November 2018, Hakobyan spoke about difficulties in married life, noting that they always happen, regardless of what the spouses do, what professions and ideas they have. “But there is one thing that helps to overcome everything, and that is love. There are no other foundations for unity, everything stems from love.”
