Turkey Orders Armenian Plane En Route to Aleppo to Land in Erzeroum for Search
International news agencies have reported that Turkey ordered an Armenian plane flying humanitarian aid to the Syrian city of Aleppo to land today in Erzeroum.
Turkey had previously been informed the plane would be carrying humanitarian aid and Armenian officials knew it would be searched, an official from the Turkish prime minister's office said.
Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal says Turkey granted the plane carrying aid for the Syrian city of Aleppo permission to fly over its airspace only on condition it can search its cargo for possible military equipment.
Uncal said, "If nothing turns out it will be allowed to continue on its route."
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said over the weekend that Turkish air space had been closed to Syrian planes. Syria has also banned Turkish planes from flying over its territory.
Yerevan's ArmenPress news agency reports that Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Balayan stated that the Erzeroum landing was pre-planned and in accord with preliminary agreement with Ankara.
