Activists Announce Creation of "Pan-Armenian Environmental Front"
A group of environmental activists in Armenia and the diaspora have publicly announced the creation of a new organization called the “Pan-Armenian Environmental Front.
The initiating group says a united front of concerned Armenians is needed to confront what it calls the growing eco-colonialism of the homeland by foreign capital and the domestic oligarchy.
The activists argue that the natural resources of Armenia are being exploited by these forces, resulting in irreparable damage to the environment, turning residents of rural communities into present-day indentured laborers and widespread emigration from the country.
The new group wants to set up a pan-Armenian network that will monitor the environmental situation in Armenia according to sub-sectors; i.e. mining, hydro-electric plants, forestry management, etc.
The overall objective of the PAEF is to preserve the environment of Armenia, sustainable economic growth and social justice.
The PAEF says its first step will be to organize branches in Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, Stepanakert (Artsakh), Los Angeles and Moscow.
