Boy Claims He Was Beaten by Yerevan Police

A 15 year-old boy claims the cops beat him while he was held incognito for several hours at a local Yerevan police station.

The boy was taken in for questioning as a material witness on the evening of July 13 after shots rang out in the courtyard of his building in Yerevan.

Narineh Sargsyan, Yura's attorney, says that yesterday she tried unsuccessfully to see the boy on four occasions but was repeatedly told to wait by Police Investigator Kamo Sharoyan. The attorney says that Sharoyan kept promising her that the boy would be brought out after ten minutes or so. But he never appeared.

The Helsinki Association tried to deliver a letter about the boy's "disappearance" to the Shengavit Police Station but says that the police refused to accept the note.

The police released Yura Simonyan on the evening of July 14. The boy claims that the cops beat him in an attempt to get him to say that he saw who fired the shots in the courtyard altercation.

Yura's family plans to take the boy to see a court physician today.
