Migration from Armenia: Pessimism Regarding the Future
At a press conference called today in Yerevan, Karine Danielyan, Head of the Association for Sustainable Human Development NGO, painted a bleak picture of Armenia's future demographic trend.
"According to our latest studies, 40-45% of the country's populace sees its future outside of Armenia. Moreover, visit any village and they will show you adverts about how one can relocate to Russia," Danielyan said.
While she confessed that a mass exodus from the country isn't noticeable, each person that leaves has a great impact on the overall impression in Armenia that the authorities actually encourage such migration.
Recently, Danielyan and a group of other intellectuals issued a public statement expressing their concerns about the migration. Today, she said that the statement had no political agenda.
"In fact, we are ready to help the government draft an agenda to resolve the issue. We even approached parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamyan who expressed a willingness to organize hearings on the matter," said Danielyan.
She said that the group was planning to meet with RA Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and that they hoped that the government would seriously take up the challenge and take the group's proposals into account.
Danielyan argues that pessimism had swept the country and this is causing many to forsake Armenia. Furthermore, she claims that the rise in suicides can also be attributed to these sentiments of gloom and doom.
"All this has to change because now we are not capable of sustaining the population," she warned.
