Bagratyan: 'If only the protesters in Kiev knew how much Armenians are paying for gas'

The following post appeared on the Facebook page of Hrant Bagratyan, a former Armenian Prime Minister who currently serves as a Member of Parliament.

“The day before yesterday, it was reported that the U.S. economy grew 3.6% in the 3rd quarter.

This is a U.S. quarterly record for the past nine years. 2013 economic growth for China is now being pegged at 7.8%.

All this comes at a time when Armenian Prime Minister Sargsyan stated, during a presentation of the country’s 2014 budget, that the promised rate of economic development hasn’t been realized to the slowing down of international economic growth.

This is simply a lie.

In Kiev, huge numbers of people have gathered in Kiev’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) demanding change. They pay the equivalent of 13.7 AMD for electricity (it’s 37 AMD in Armenia). They pay 35,500 AMD for natural gas (it’s 158,000 in Armenia). And if you use it a lot, at the most it’s 53,700.

In Armenia, we pay 158,000 AMD for gas ($391); and if we translate it into calorific value - $496.

And, if we take into account that according to the Minister of Energy, we still owe Russia $90 after paying all that - $586.

This is the reality, even though we are supposedly buying gas 2.3 times cheaper.

What would happen if the people in Independence Square suddenly found out about these numbers?”
