Lack of Journalistic Prudence: National Security Service Says No Terrorism in Armenia During Sochi Olympic Games
The National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia responded to an article titled "The Chechens are Planning a Terrorist Act in Armenia" published by local newspaper 168 Zham. Here is the state agency's response in full:
"In an article titled 'The Chechens are Planning a Terrorist Act in Armenia' in the January 28–29 issue of 168 Zham, addressing notorious terrorist Doka Umarov's call that the Sochi Olympics must fail, author of the article Avetis Babajanyan declared: 'Our sources close to the ruling authorities inform [us] that during the Sochi Olympic Games, terrorist attacks might take place on Russian establishments in Armenia.'
"Naturally, this [media] report could not attract the attention of security bodies, and Avetis Babajanyan was invited to the National Security Service [offices]. He gave the following written explanation to the article, especially the phrase 'Our sources close to the ruling authorities inform that…': 'I've used the specified phrase as a journalistic tool, mainly to give the article [some] edge. With the utmost responsibility, I declare that no information or facts were conveyed to me by any source on the topic raised in the article.'
"It becomes clear from this explanation that Babajanyan's 'article' is not only a fabrication, but also the result of a lack of journalistic gravity and rudimentary accountability. It is simply a unconscious recital of unfounded assumptions. The journalist did not endeavor to think about people, who will read these ominous statements. By the way, the newspaper's editor didn't think about this either."
