Etchmiadzin Session Discusses Ongoing Church Problems in Georgia
Yesterday, at the Mother See of Etchmiadzin, a Spiritual Council was convened that discussed problems being faced by the Armenian Church Diocese of Georgia. Legal issues, the question of the return of Armenian Church properties and the November 16th incident at the Holy Mother of God Church in Nubarashen involving the dislocation and despoilment of Armenian gravestones were reviewed.
Present at the Council was Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan, Primate of the Georgian Diocese, to give a first-hand account of the issues involved.
Noting that neither the Georgian state authorities nor the Georgian Church have positively responded to the many petitioins made by Etchmiadzin regarding ongoing violations, Catholicios Garegin II commented that, "The Armenian Apostolic Church will continue to bring the matter to the attention of world public opinion in the hope that the exisiting problems in the Georgian-Armenian community's national-religious sector can be amicably resolved by our joint efforts.
