Court of Cassation Orders Conditional Release of Husik Baghdasaryan
Today the ROA Court of Cassation ordered the immediate release of Husik Baghdasaryan, commander of the "Masis" battalion and a supporter of Levon Ter-Petrosyan's presidential run earlier this year.
On March 31st, Mr. Baghdasaryan had been found guilty by the Ararat and Vayots Dzor Regional Court of possession of an illegal firearm and was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment.
On the appeal of his lawyer, the Appeals Court had reduced the sentence by one year.
The judgement of the Cassation Court still held Mr. Baghdasaryan to be guilty of the charge but sustained the appeal and decided to conditionally not apply the sentence and instead called for a two year probationary period. Mr. Baghdasaryan's lawyer, Vardan Zournachyan, has decided to take the case to European Court of Human Rights since, in his words, "there is no basis for finding my client guilty of the charges."
