Rally and March to Condemn Assault on Edik Baghdasaryan
A rally to protest the assault on Hetq editor-in-chief Edik Baghdasaryan and in defense of freedom of speech in Armenia took place yesterday, November 19th, in front of the Chief Prosecutor’s Offices. Representatives of various social and media organizations were joined by students of Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Journalism. Rally participants chanted slogans including “We are all Edik…Defend Journalists” and “Who will be next…Don’t strangle free speech”.
The protestors, numbering more than fifty, started to make their way to the Government Building but were cordoned off by a detachment of police on the pretext that the march was not sanctioned.
The marchers however, arguing that the law allows for impromptu marches when the number of participants is less than 100, went around the police and eventually made their way to Abovyan Street. Police once again took up positions to halt the marchers but were allowed to proceed to Northern Avenue after negotiations with the Police.
