Strike at Deno Gold Company in Kapan is Over…For Now

The intermittent strike that has been in progress for the last few days at the Deno Gold Mining Company in Kapan was called off as of midday Wednesday, November 12th as a result of an agreement reached between Mr. Robert Falletta, General Manager of Deno Gold and a top-level delegation dispatched to the region by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan to assess the issue as well as worker unrest at other mine sites in Syunik Marz. The delegation, comprised of Armen Movsisyan, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Arsen Hambardzumyan, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs and Economic Minister Nerses Yeritsyan, met with the Deno Gold General Manager and advised him, in no uncertain terms, to avoid job cuts at all possible costs. This point was brought home by Minister Movsisyan to Mr. Falletta, who appeared perturbed by his candor. However, the Minister told Mr. Falletta that, “We have come here to choose the best way out for both sides.” Mr. Falletta also met with reporters after the meeting and stated that he had spoken with the CEO of Dandee Precious Metals, Deno Gold’s parent company, and had laid out all the alternative solutions to the problem to them. He added that the owners would be in Armenia next Monday and that this was a positive sign. Deno Gold’s General Manager added that wages would not be cut and that he would send another letter to the Kapan Regional Employment Center overriding the previous letter where he had certified that 721 jobs would be cut. “Sadly I can’t do anything about the 148 employees who have already received dismissal notices. But let me state that the personnel roles are being reviewed, that people continue to work and they we be patient and wait till Monday.”
