Prosperous Armenia Party Top Official Declares – “There can be no Karabakh solution without mutual concessions.”

The above is a statement made by Aram Safaryan, Secretary of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) Parliamentary Fraction at a press conference held today. In addition he noted that it is too early to talk about the extent and form of the concessions since, “It’s unacceptable to talk about getting undressed before we even see the water. If Azerbaijan makes the concession regarding the right of the people of Karabakh to self-determination, the remaining questions on concessions will be dealt with.” Mr. Safaryan refused to answer when directly asked by Hetq what concessions would be acceptable to the PAP. As to whether the PAP would remain in the ruling coalition even if their coalition partner the ARF, which has declared “Not one inch of land to the enemy”, pulls out of the coalition due to the concessionary steps taken by the regime, Mr. Safaryan stated, “The overall interest of the Armenian people in the NKR issue is neither the problem of our Party or that of our Coalition. There must be widespread public debate and only then can we speak about definite resolutions.” As to what advice the PAP would give the people if such debate took place Mr. Safaryan replied, “If and when that time comes we will give them our advice. We have faith in the President and in the Foreign Minister and feel that it isn’t correct to meddle in the negotiations process.” When asked by one of the reporters at the press conference if Armenia can serve as a greater safeguard to the security of Karabakh than that realized by the liberated territories Mr. Safaryan stated, “The ceasefire has held for fifteen years given the defensive capabilities of the Armenian military forces and our favorable military-political positions.”
