Judge Recesses "March 1st Seven" Trial Until December 27th
The trial of seven Armenians charged with crimes stemming from the events of March 1st continued today at the Shengavit Jurisdictional Court. The session was 40 minutes late in starting and there was no space within the courtroom for relatives of the accused. Even the wives of Alexander Arzumanyan and Myasnik Malkhasyan couldn't be seated since the court was already packed with public spectators. A rucous errupted soon afterwards with the relatives of the accused demanding entry. Police soon arrived on the scene and calmed tensions. They were successful in seating all present.
Reporters were barred from entering the court chamber however and were instead ushered off to a separate room upstairs to follow the hearings on TV monitors. The reporters protested and some were eventually led downstairs to the courtroom with the others remaining in the second floor viewing room.
Judge Mnastakan Martirosyan then entered and directed the defense attorney to comprise a list of the relatives of the accused so that they could be admitted to the court by name in the future. Judge Martirosyan then defended the 40 minute delay by stating that one of the accused, Grigor Voskerchyan, had been feeling ill and had been brought to the court late. This elicited cat-calls and laughter from those seated in the courtroom. The judge then declared a 30 minute recess and went into chambers.
Upon returning Judge Martirosyan declared that the defendants would heretofore be barred from the proceedings for "disrespecting the court". The judge based this decision on the fact that the defendants hadn't stood up when he first entered the court. Apparently flustered by the entire situation, Judge Martirosyan then misspoke when he declared the trial recessed until "October 27th". He quickly corrected himself and stated that the trial would continue on December 27th.
