Armenia's Human Rights Ombudsman - Prosecution Must Prove Guilt in "Case of 7"
At a press conference, Armenia's Human Rights Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan stated that, "We we visit the "Case of 7" people in the detention centers the vast majority claim their innocence and they they are the victime of a political frame-up." Mr Harutyunyan also stated that the prosecution is obliged to prove the guilt of the defendants and not that the defendants are obliged to prove their innocence. The case is now in the courts but Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe's Human Rights Rapporteur had advised the government not to send the case to trial just yet. For his part, Ombudsman Harutyunyan stated that, "I have not familiarized myself with the case.Let's wait and see what the court finds."
Mr. Harutyunyan decribed the case as a unique 'litmus test' given that both sides has focused on the events of March 1st in their deliberations. "This is becoming a central case and the issue of the organizers is coming to the fore. In other words, everything will be revealed with this case. I am not prepared to pin any hopes on what course the judge will take. All I want to do is express an opinion based on a coordinated collection of arguments."
