Seminar of Armenian and Turkish Film-Makers in Yerevan

At the initiative and invitation of the 'Golden Apricot' Film Festival Committee, ten youg Turkish film-makers have arrived in Yerevan to take part in the second Turkish-Armenian seminar devoted to film. Today, the Turkish film-makers met with reporters. The aim of the seminar is to coordinate joint efforts of Armenian and Turksih film-makers and producers and to spur cooperation between film-makers of the two nations via the 'language of film'. The seminar organizers also view film as an ideal way to spur political and cultural dialogue between the two peoples as well. Chigdem Materi, who heads the social organization "Anatolu Culture" stated that film has a strong unifying force to it and that even the short films can play a large role in this field. "We are from the same region and have no need of borders. The only border separating us is the Arpa River. We would like to see the Silk Road once again restored so that we could cross over to the oter side of the river," noted Materi. The Turkish participants told reporters that a great idea had surfaced regarding a joint Turkish-Armenian film project; to bring Fetiye Chetin's recent novel Grandmother to the big screen. The Turkish film-makers noted that the idea was still in the planning stage and was proceeding slowly. Tomorrow, the seminar participants will travel to Tzaghkadzor to continue their discussions and film screenings.
