Agarak Plant to Close its Doors
According to "Hetq" sources the Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Plant will be closing its doors. The owners of the firm have already informed the RoA government of their decision to halt operations. In all likelihood the owners will travel to the plant this Monday to inform employees of the shut down. "Hetq" sources inform us that a government meeting was held today on the issue but that there was no mention of reopening the plant at a later date given that it is impossible to predict when the international financial crisis would ease, thus resulting in a rise in copper prices on the world market.
In these conditions the further operation of the Kapan and Kajaran copper-molybdenum plants is also doubtful. We will provide information on the status of these locales in the future as well. The Agarak plant was the first in Armenia to feel the impact of the global crisis and back on November 5th some 400 workers staged a protest action over impending job and wage cuts.
