Heritage Party Signature Drive Fails in National Assembly

The petition drive launched by the Heritage Party, calling for an extraordinary session of the RoA National Assembly designed to nullify the detention procedures of deputies passed during the term of Tigran Torosyan, failed to garner the required number of signatures yesterday. The petition was signed by only eleven deputies as opposed to the required forty-four. Three deputies now incarcerated signed, along with the 6 deputies of the Heritage Party, Viktor Dallakyan, an independent deputy, and former National Assembly President Tigran Torosyan. Heghineh Bisharyan commented that the Rule of Law Party (Orinats Yerkir) didn't participate in the petition drive because, "It wouldn't change a thing". She added that the matter was up to the courts and said that she had been insulted by some of the comments made by the jailed deputies. "I voted against the detention of Hakob Hakobyan but he made some disparaging remarks about his colleagues in the parliament. I don't even want to repeat his words." Hrayr Karapetyan stated that the petition drive was illegal in any event. "If the trial is already underway then you can't legally change their method of detention. That signature drive would have been illegal even if all the deputies in the parliament had signed it." Deputy Galust Sahakyan, leader of the Republican Party faction, was certain that he could have garnered the 44 signatures in the span of five minutes. He stated that the reason he didn't do so was, "There is no opposition just like that. If we thought that we could have helped things along by such a move there would have been no other political force behind the drive."
