Kiosk Owners Protest at Yerevan Municipality

Early this morning, around 100 kiosk operators took their protest to the steps of the Yerevan Municipality in what appears to be a growing sign of discontent with Mayor Karapetyan's decision to move ahead with the dismantling of kiosks and other commercial stalls from the streets and parks in Yerevan.

The demonstrators were joined by Heritage Party MP's Anahit Bakhshyan, Stepan Safaryan and Armen Martirosyan.

Back on August 2, MP Safaryan had petitioned the Municipality to temporarily postpone any dismantling of street stalls and called for a discussion of the matter that would include all interested parties.

Today, the Heritage Party MP's attempted to get an answer from the Municipality regarding Safaryan's request.

In a talk with MP Bakhshyan, Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan promised that such a discussion would take place in the next few days.

The MP's also took part in an extraordinary session of the Yerevan City Council and urged the body to also review the issue of dismantling the kiosks.

Re: Kiosk's comment. Yerevan is largely a Soviet-era city, whose buildings were not designed to accomodate shopfronts. (Small shops were manifestations of capitalism and good soviets shopped in large, state-run stores or collective markets). This makes Yerevan very unlike capital cities in Europe. Since independence, many buildings have had their ground floors converted into shops, or have had shops created in their basements - and often this has resulted in the buildings being disfigured, pavements narrowed and obstructed to allow for basement access, and streetscapes spoilt by hundreds of ugly signs. However, none of this has provided Yerevan with enough small shop spaces. So, as well as the employment implications, the kiosks serve a legitimate function for the population of Yerevan and should not be easily abolished.
