City Continues Plan to Dismantle "Illegal" Street Kiosks
The Yerevan Municipality stated today that it is going ahead with plans to dismantle illegal kiosks and street stalls in the downtown area despite mounting protests waged by vendors.
Yesterday, some 100 kiosk owners converged on city hall to voice their opposition to the plan. Heritage Party MP's met with Mayor Karapetyan who promised to conduct hearings on the matter.
The municipality also said that it will not be granting extensions to those kiosk operators who leases have expired.
The city says that new commercial sites will henceforth only be granted to newsstands.
