Did Erebuni Hospital "Dump" Mentally Unstable Old Woman Back on the Street?
Late on the night of August 4, the neighbours of Svetlana Danakhoulyan called for an ambulance.
Svetlana was running a very high fever and her friends were concerned. The ambulance arrived and took the woman to the Erebuni Medical Center in Yerevan.
Just two hours later, neighbours were aghast to spot 70 year-old Svetlana lying on the pavement in the courtyard in front of their building.
Larisa Sargsyan, a building resident and president of the tenant's board, told Hetq that when she looked out her window and saw the old woman on the street below, she couldn't believe her eyes.
Mrs. Sargsyan was one of the neighbours who helped carry Svetlana down to the ambulance in the first place.
The horrified neighbour again called the ambulance service, wanting to know what hospital the old woman had been taken to. She was told that Svetlana Danakhoulyan had been rushed to Erebuni Medical Center.
The concerned neighbour called up Erebuni Medical to find out what was going on.
Hospital staff told Larisa that the old woman said she felt fine and had been sent home in a cab.
"I made it clear to the doctors that Svetlana wasn't fine and that they had an oath to take care of her. Naturally, they begged to differ and claimed that the woman was in good condition and that a taxi took her home," recounted Larisa.
Larisa called notified some of her neighbours and they went down to check on Svetlana. They again called for an ambulance since the elderly woman didn't appear to be in good health.
The neighbours then attempted to call the Health Ministry's hot line to inform them of the situation but no one answered at that late hour.
"It's like the hospital was dealing with a stray cat. They just dropped her off in the street. It still makes me mad," says Larisa.
Svetlana Danakhoulyan lives alone and is known to periodically suffer from psychological imbalances.
Hasmik Sayan, who heads the Admissions office at the Erebuni Center, offered a different version as to what happened.
In fact, when Sayan found out that Svetlana's neighbours had lodged a formal complaint, the hospital official said she was fed up with her job.
Sayan claims that on the night in question an attending nurse had called her about a patient that had been brought to the hospital with a high temperature.
The nurse also said that the patient was quite unruly and hadn't allowed anyone to take her vital signs.
Sayan goes on to say that Svetlana was scheduled for some computer tests but that the old woman went nuts and started to scream and curse, accusing doctors of trying to kill her.
The hospital administrator says that doctors again called her, saying that the patient was refusing to cooperate. Sayan claims that the doctors wanted to send the woman home by ambulance but that the patient chose to go by taxi.
A hospital staffer escorted Svetlana in the cab. When they arrived at the building, Sayan says that Svetlana even attacked the hospital's worker.
The old woman is now back at Erebuni Medical. But Hasmik Sayan says that Svetlana is still refusing to allow doctors to approach.
If and when she calms down, doctors just might get the chance to examine her and prescribe further treatment.
Hasmik Sayan also claims that it was the hospital worker who sent another ambulance after Svetlana after the woman was spotted lying in the courtyard and the neighbours called the hospital
Larisa Sargsyan claims that concerned neighbours made the call.
The question remains as to why the hospital has now succeeded in getting Svetlana to stay when it was supposedly unable to do so on August 4?
Might it just have something to do with the complaints raised by the elderly woman's concerned neighbours?
