Opposition Claims Use of Military Forces on March 1st Violates RoA Constitution
Today, at the "Ourbat Club", Vladimir Karapetyan, who heads the foreign affairs section of the opposition-led Armenian National Congress (HAK), presented evidence alleging that personnel and equipment of the Armenian military were sent to confront demonstrators on the night of March 1, 2008 in the vicinity of the Myasnikyan Statue in Yerevan.
"The decision of the regime, to employ heavy military equipment against peaceful protestors, equipment mounted with military machine guns, is a violation of the nation's constitution and numerous international conventions. This violation must receive an appropriate legal evaluation," noted Mr. Karapetyan and added this was a provocative move by the regime to incite the protestors. The speaker noted that it was only due to the restraint of the crowds that they weren't taken in by the machinations of the regime and prevented a further heightening of tensions of the situation.
Mr. Karapetyan went on to state that as of 2:00 p.m. on that eventful day the citizens gathered at the Myasnikyan statue were forced to defend themselves and their loved ones and relatives, something that is their right to do.
The HAK representative also played a video tape showing the arrival of an armed personnel carrier belonging to the interior forces arriving on the scene of the demonstration around 2:00 p.m. on March 1. "This evidence is sufficient to prove that the RoA Defense Ministry, in violation of the law and constitution, was involved with law enfocement personnel in confronting peaceful and unarmed demonstrators protesting the fraudulent presidential elections. The responsibility for this rests with former President Robert Kocharyan, former Defense Miister Mikayel Harutyunyan, Chief of Staff Seyran Ohanyan and Yuri Khachatryan, Chief of the Yerevan Mlitary Unit."
