Armenian National Congress Issues Statement on 1st Anniversary of Presidential Elections
The opposition-based Armenian National Congress (HAK) has issued a public statement on the 1st anniversary of the February 19, 2008 presidential elections. In part, the statement reads:
February 19 marks the one year anniversary of the infamous presidential election of last year. One year ago on that day, the tyrannical regime established by the ruling clique displayed its anti-democratic nature and true criminal face. Not only did it call into force its entire arsenal for election fraud but exposed its criminal face. What took place in Armenia on that day was a brutal usurpation of power.
On the occasion of that infamous day members of various HAK youth groups planned to stage a protest action near the building of the Central Elections Committee building, the den of the election fiasco. But hours before the demonstration was to have started, rows of police, outnumbering the youth by three to one, blocked the two entrances to the street. Without any explanation or proper legal warrant, the police began to disperse the young people. This all goes to prove that even one year after the fraudulent elections the regime is still threatened by any public remembrance of the event.
