Samvel Vanoyan - "We must put an end to the republic of the super-president"
Painter Samvel Vanoyan is participating in a street event today on Northern Avenue organized by the "Art-laboratory" organization related to March 1st. "We plan to distribute 500 books to passersby on the street. The books will present, in comic book form, a roundtable discussion on the issue of human rights in Armenia."
When a "Hetq" reporter caught up with Samvel and his friends he said that a police captain had told them to move on. "They proved that this is a tyrannical regime and that they are preventing us from exercising our rights," Samvel stated.
He stated that the action was planned for March 1 because "ten people died that day in Armenia which is a trampling underfoot of our human rights". Samvel Vanoyan intends to join the public march because "I am personally against this regime. There must be constitutional reforms. We must put an end to the republic of the super-president."
Harutyun Harutyuyan, a 70 year-old pensioner, had just be handed one of the books and confessed, "This isn't living. We curse the Soviet regime but it was a hundred times better than this. We aren't independent. We are suffocating. They don't let us walk or breathe."
Another passerby, Zhora Adibegyan, stated that, "Yesterday's statement by the Police Chief saying that the police will tolerate no disturbance this time around and that they'll operate with a heavy-hand really got the people riled up. You'll see, the people will show up today in numbers." He too had be handed one of the books and hurried along his way to the Matenadaran.
