George-Gevork Asatrian is 75 years old. He is the chairman of Malatia Educational Association. The association was founded in the USA by the Armenian emigrants from Malatia. They have implemented various charitable programs in Armenia. Vartan Partamian, head of Village Development Program at Hayastan Fund, said that their association rendered the fund with medical equipment and educational materials for spreading them in Armenia.”At present, they have donated 200 computers that will be taken to the border line villages and to other centres with the help of Hayastan All Armenian Fund,” he said. George Asatrian connected with Apaga village through Gezo Tash whose ancestors emigrated from Sasoun. His grandfather’s brother settled down in Apaga village after the emigration, while Tash’s family stayed in Istanbul. In 1990-ies the families reconnected. Visiting the village Gezo decided to assist the village’s school. He rehabilitated the school, while George promised to provide the school with computers. “Education is the best thing ever,” the Diaspora Armenian believes. “I am doing this to remember those people who donated money for this school. I believe we should help the villages. Yerevan is in quite good conditions, it experiences progress. The most important thing we need to do is to support our villages,” he emphasized. The children, the teachers and the headmaster of the school were impatiently waiting for George’s arrival at school. The schoolchildren help to take the computers to the computer classroom with great enthusiasm. Gevorg, a school boy, shared his joy with us. “I could never have the chance to use a computer before. My turn would never come. I hope now we all will be able to use the computer for our studies.” Volodya Grigoryan, headmaster of the village’s school, said that they had only two computers, while there are 239 pupils studying at the school. “I hope our children will score better results with the help of computers,” he emphasized. “It’s a great assistance to our school, as we had CDs sent from the Ministry of education that we couldn’t use. Now we can conduct our classes at a higher level,” Melik Gevorgian« deputy headmaster of the school said, adding that the school may subscribe Internet quite soon. Zhenya Gdoyan, the other deputy headmaster of the school, is also very glad. “We had to conduct our computer classes in Echmiadzin. Once a week we would take the 9th and 10th grade pupils to the Echmiadzin based calculation centre. The children would enjoy the classes so much that didn’t want to leave the computers. Now I am very glad that we will have our own computer classroom at school,” she said. After the computers were brought to the school, a refreshment party was held and the schoolmaster thanked the benefactor. George Asatrian returned to Yerevan from Echmiadzin and visited disabled children’s “Philatelphia” NGO. The benefactor presented five computers to NGO’s computer resource center. “We met George Asatrian through one of our teachers. It’s already three years that he is cooperating with us. He has greatly contributed to the development of our NGO. The donation of the computers is the highest result of this cooperation, “Hovik Israelian, chairman of the NGO said. The Chariman of NGO showed George the photos taken by the disabled children with five photo cameras donated to the organization by the benefactor. George Asatrian says that if the program is a success, it will be continuative. Translated by Anoush Mkrtchyan
