GEOPROMINING Engaged State Institutions and Private Companies in Illegal Process

By EcoLur Network EcoLur found out that a 123-page document, entitled: “Conceptual Decision on Gold Recovery Plant Placement at Sotq Deposit Territory, Taking into Consideration Environmental Risks,” was published under the logo of GeoProMining company. The document is the estimation of Sotq mining enterprise’s (which includes the plant, cyanide and chemicals’ warehouse, as well as the tailings dam) impact on environment. This document is required for the implementation of environmental expertise of the ROA Ministry of Environment. The Ministry of Environment stated publicly that it has no intention to support this project, since it constitutes great danger for Lake Sevan and it contradicts the ROA Law on Sevan (it refers to the prohibition of mining activity in basin of Lake Sevan--EcoLur .) However, now the Ministry of Environment, as well as other state structures appeared as consultant[s] of this project. For example, the document’s introduction reads: “Natural and man-caused risks are revealed and presented by Institutes of Geology, Ecosphere Investigations, Hydro-ecology and Fishery of the ROA National Academy of Sciences…The work is based on consultation and concordance with the aforementioned institutes, ROA Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources, State Cadastre of Real Estate, HayHydroEnergoNakhagits CJSC, Genarg OJSC, as well as Epoch Recourses Ltd, Golder Associates and Fraser Alexander.” EcoLur will continue monitoring the project on construction of a gold recovery enterprise at Sotq through its info website: www.ecolur.org
