Heritage Party MP Intends to Leave Party over Mayoral Flap
According to the newspaper "Pakagitz", Stepan Safaryan, the former secretary of the Heritage Party, who is on a working trip to Great Britain, intends to declare that he will be leaving the ranks of the party after returning to Armenia and that he might even go so far as to renounce his seat in the National Assembly as a sign of protest over the party's decision not to join with the Armenian National Congress (HAK) to contest the upcoming May elections for Yerevan mayor.
Mr. Safaryan is one of the Heritage Party faction members in the RoA National Assembly who came out in favor of Heritage renouncing its seats in the legislative body to protest the regime's moves following the presidential elections last year.
The paper also writes that Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan might not visit Armenia in April for a session of the Black Sea Economic Development convention, as previously planned. It has become known that Babacan might prefer to attend a summit in Japan devoted to the problems in Pakistan, scheduled to take place at the same time, April 17. This possible move by Turkey has been interpreted by analysts against the backdrop of recent activities in the United States surrounding President's Obama's stated pledge to recognize the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Turkey has claimed that such a development will serve to damage improving relations between Turkey and Armenia. Babacan's Japan visit has thus been seen as a warning to Washington that its threats are real.
